First Post and Reality Show Manners

July 16, 2008 - Leave a Response

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I know, right, I’m so hip and have my fingers on the pulse of society by getting a blog finally in 2008. In fact, I’ve been so slow on getting a blog that live video blogging, as seen on Blogtv.com is as trendier as ever.

I’m shy and awkward, however, so that won’t be happening anytime soon. In a way this is a great thing, keeps in line with other behaviors and interests. For example, I love classic music, anything from Zeppelin to Hendrix to Clapton to Heart to Sly and the Family Stone to Otis Redding to Marvin Gaye to Santana to The Allman Brothers to Lynard Skynard to their best friend Neil ‘FUCKING’ Young.

Just like how music was amazing back then, I’d like to think that blogging like it was back then is amazing too! It’s like, sticking to the roots of the movement rather than moving on the trends that hit next. So take a moment, bookmark this blog, or add me to your friends list, or say hi. I’ve never really done this blog thing so I’m intrigued to find out how it goes, so please don’t let me be one of those one-week members who post a couple times and get bored.

I’ve noticed a trend over the past few weeks, and it’s along the same lines. As part of my job, I watch a lot of reality TV, and this week I noticed that manners are seriously lacking in the genre.

Case in point, on ‘Canadian Idol’, the contestants sing their song and then hear feedback from the judges. The purpose of having 4 judges on the Canuck installment of the show is to give a broader spectrum of opinions. There was one girl who got bad criticism from 3 of the judges, and the 3rd, whether he was being honest, told her he loved it. Now not this girl imparticular, but I have found there is a portion of the contestants, going back in the past and even today, who have a snooty or disrespectful response to hearing what the judges think. This week’s bootee, Adam, didn’t thank any of the judges at all who had something negative to say or anything period, really.

My last example, and yes, you can leave now and never come back if I’ve annoyed you already, has to do with ‘Big Brother’. During the nomination ceremony to see who’s eliminated, each person who is safe has their name on a key pulled from a whatever-you-call-it. What irks me about this is very few people period thank the head of household for saving them.

Is it strategy, or do you think these people are just rude? Of course there’s shows like Tila Tequilla and the Bachelor who’s contestants all but start jerking off after getting the proverbial ‘key’ or ‘rose’ or ‘bottle of lube’. But when people are rude, I think it shows, and maybe that’s why Adam was eliminated from ‘Idol’.

What are your irks about reality TV contestants and their ways? Feel free to drop that you hate reality TV but make sure you explain why and just don’t spam my page please.
